About the artist
Born in 1945 in Amsterdam the Dutch artist Remko de Gilde showed his early work in Gallery Buri in Amsterdam since the early seventies of the last century.
Remko, autodidact, made in those days mostly miniature oil paintings, watercolours as well as etchings. In 1972 he met his wife Ria Hessels.
She was a silversmith and they married in 1977. The couple decided in 1978 to move to the Greek island Kos where they started a gallery in the mountain village Pyli.
Besides Remko’s artwork and Ria’s jewellery they showed the works of important Greek artists who made ceramics and small sculptures.
With great success the gallery existed until 2020. Ria died in 2021 at the age of almost 81 but Remko continued to make art however now mostly bigger size oil paintings.
He has a permanent exhibition of his paintings in the local taverna of his friend Wassili Drosos at the main square of the village of Pyli.
Interested people can also visit his home studio where he is usually busy creating new artwork.
